Will my driving record affect me as a pilot?
Yes, your driving record can affect your career as a pilot. Airlines and aviation employers often review driving records as part of their background checks.
A clean driving record suggests that you demonstrate these qualities in your everyday life. In contrast, a history of traffic violations, DUIs, or reckless driving may raise concerns about your decision-making and reliability.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires pilots to report certain motor vehicle actions. For example, any DUI (Driving Under the Influence) conviction must be reported to the FAA within 60 days. Failure to report such incidents can lead to serious consequences, including fines or suspension of your pilot’s license.
Airlines and corporate aviation companies often have stringent hiring criteria. A poor driving record might affect your chances of being hired, as employers seek candidates who demonstrate a high level of responsibility both on the ground and in the air.
Employers may also consider your driving record when determining insurance risks and premiums. A clean record can positively influence these factors, making you a more attractive candidate. When I have talked with employers, most have said that they will ask about driving records in an interview. If you cannot explain why you have the driving record you have and appear to be unwilling to take ownership for the errors you’ve made, you are unlikely to get hired. One noted that in an interview they will typically ask a question such as, “I see you’ve got a speeding ticket on your record for 60 in a 55. How fast were you really going?” They consider it an “integrity test” to see if the applicant will own up to it or say it must have been that darn evil old officer was just out to get me and they were really only doing 52 while driving their grandma to church.
If you have past driving infractions, take steps to improve your record. Demonstrating a period of clean and responsible driving can mitigate concerns and show that you’ve learned from past mistakes. Maintaining a clean driving record is crucial for aspiring pilots. It reflects your overall responsibility and can significantly impact your career prospects in aviation.
