What if I didn’t get a good score on my knowledge test? Should I retake it for a better score?
Simple answer here. No.
Don’t bother.
Sure, you should study to get the best score you can on the first try, but if you score a 70% or better, that’s passing. Few examiners are going to think much about whether you got a 76% or an 88%.
I can honestly tell you that I have seen students and testing applicants that had stronger knowledge with a 70% score than those who have had a 100% test score. In some cases, it comes down to how well people test, and how they studied for a particular test. With some of the test prep software you can virtually memorize the questions and answers into rote memory and then go take the test and get a great score. That short term retention of answers has little to do with actual learning. A person who scored a 70% and actually studied material instead of just memorizing answers is likely to have a better base of knowledge that will serve them as a pilot.
The score is just that. A score. For most pilots, get the pass and call it good.
While you might tend to be an overachiever, taking the test again to get a 90 or 100% isn’t worth the extra effort or cost.
